✈️ Planning a trip to Canada? Make sure you don’t forget your eTA (Electronic Travel Authorization) — it’s mandatory for many travelers, even for a short stopover at a Canadian airport.
But do you really need one? Let’s break it down clearly.
✅ What is a Canada eTA?
The Canada eTA is a digital travel authorization required for visa-exempt foreign nationals flying to Canada.
- It’s linked electronically to your passport.
- It is not a visa, but it is mandatory.
- You don’t need it for land or sea travel (only air travel).
🌍 Who needs an eTA for Canada?
You must apply for an eTA if you:
- Are a citizen of a visa-exempt country
- Plan to enter Canada by air
- Are traveling for tourism, business, transit, or family visit
Here are examples of countries whose citizens need an eTA:
Country | eTA Required? |
---|---|
France | ✅ Yes |
Belgium | ✅ Yes |
Germany | ✅ Yes |
Spain | ✅ Yes |
Italy | ✅ Yes |
Australia | ✅ Yes |
Japan | ✅ Yes |
South Korea | ✅ Yes |
United Kingdom 🇬🇧 | ✅ Yes (except holders of certain UK visas) |
⚠️ Note: U.S. citizens do NOT need an eTA — they can travel to Canada without one.
🚫 Who does not need an eTA?
You don’t need an eTA if:
- You are a Canadian citizen (even dual nationals)
- You hold a valid Canadian visa
- You are a permanent resident of Canada
- You are a U.S. citizen (but U.S. green card holders do need one)
✈️ What if I’m only transiting through Canada?
Even if you’re just transiting at a Canadian airport, you’ll still need an eTA — unless you’re exempt (see above).
Example:
- Flying from Paris → Toronto → Mexico?
➡️ You need an eTA, even if you don’t leave the airport.
📅 How long is the eTA valid?
- Valid for 5 years or until your passport expires
- Multiple entries allowed
- Maximum stay per visit: 6 months
🛂 Still unsure? Here’s what to do
If you’re flying to Canada and your nationality is on the list of visa-exempt countries, you must apply for your eTA online before departure.
💡 It only takes a few minutes and costs around 29 € on our website myetaonline.com
